Back to School and Chiropractic

Back Packs on students can cause back pain

Kids are getting ready to go back to school.  Time to get all of their supplies: pens, pencils, calculators, book bags, etc.  You also want to make sure you get their spine checked too.  Kids take so many tumbles and falls, that they need to be check very regularly to make sure they stay healthy.

How can regular chiropractic visits help keep your child healthy.  Well, with ADD/ADHD being the latest epidemic, chiropractic adjustments can help calm the nervous system which will calm down the child.  Imagine your hyperactive child calmed without drugs.

Scoliosis is something that needs to be checked in all adolescents.  Many school districts perform regular screenings.  It is more common in girls than in boys.  If you are worried about scoliosis and would like to get your child checked, get her into a chiropractor.  If the child is diagnosed with scoliosis, chiropractic care is the best way to treat it.  The traditional medical treatment is to wait and see.  If it gets worst, then they might brace or even recommend surgery.  If there are no wedge vertebrae causing scoliosis, and it is just functional, then chiropractors are the leading experts in the treatment and successfully “curing” scoliosis.

You want to have the way your child wears her backpack checked out by the back specialist, a chiropractor.  If the child wears the backpack too low on her back or only wears in on one shoulder, the back muscles can go into spasm and cause problems for your child.  These problems can be simple spinal pain or the child may develop fatigued, headaches or lost focus.  You also want to make sure the load that your child is caring in her bag is not too heavy.  Twenty-five to thirty pounds is all the more she should be carrying on her back.  If she has more than that in books, she may need to carry some in her arms to help balance herself.

Athletes are in special need of a chiropractor.  Everyone sees the hits the football players take on Friday nights, but also do that all week long in practice.  Don’t forget about the dives the volleyball players take at each game.  The knee pads protect their knees, but the jarring force behind the impact is just as hard a being in an auto accident.  Cross country runners need to keep their ankles and knees in check.  If they step in a hole or turn an ankle, that can change their form, increase pain and decrease their performance time.

A student, especially the high school student, spends all day hunched over a desk.  The mid-to-upper back and neck get tight and sore.  The hunched position can cause muscle spasm and pain along with upper thoracic spine subluxations.  This is known as student syndrome, which is very annoying, and can make it difficult for the student to study.

Going back to school can be exciting and stressful for both the parents and the students.  There are so many things one needs to remember to make it successful.  Please don’t neglect your or your child’s health.  Regular visits will keep them healthy and help them in school.  So do yourself and your child a favor and have them checked out by a chiropractor before the school year gets too far ahead of them.
